Marc Chagall Beyond time

DESCRIPTION

A Grand Exhibition After 7 Years,
Chagall’s Unreleased Works Arrive in Seoul

Marc Chagall (1887–1985), one of the most prominent figures in 20th-century European art, is celebrated for his exploration of poetic and vibrant colors. Marc Chagall Special Exhibition: BEYOND TIME just opened on May 23, 2025, at the Hangaram Art Museum, Seoul Arts Center.

For the first time in seven years, this exhibition, curated by Francesca Villanti and Paul Schneiter, will present a collection of over 170 works, spanning paintings, drawings, lithographs, oil paintings, and stained glass. The exhibition is structured around seven thematic sections:

Memory / Etchings and Techniques / Paris / The Sacred / Colors / Mediterranée / Flowers.

Each section has been meticulously designed to create an immersive experience where Chagall’s use of color and symbolism unfolds organically. This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to deeply engage with the essence of Chagall’s artistic universe.

Most notably, seven never-before-seen original works created by Chagall himself will be unveiled, offering an intimate look at his fluid lines, bold brushstrokes, and the evocative play of color.

Two of Chagall’s most renowned public art projects—the Paris Opera Garnier ceiling painting and the Hadassah Medical Center stained glass windows—will be brought to life through immersive media art installations.

The ceiling painting at Paris Opera Garnier, a masterpiece fusing music and visual art, will be transformed into an enveloping 360-degree digital experience, allowing visitors to feel as if they are stepping directly into the artwork.

Meanwhile, the stained glass windows at Hadassah Medical Center, known for their surreal compositions of animals, plants, celestial bodies, and human figures, will be presented as a dynamic light installation. This reimagined experience will enable visitors to witness the shifting brilliance of Chagall’s stained glass artistry in real-time.

Through these multimedia enhancements, the exhibition will elevate Chagall’s color compositions beyond passive visual appreciation, transforming them into a sensorial journey of light and space.

Marc Chagall Special Exhibition: BEYOND TIME will be on view from May 23 to September 21, 2025, at Hangaram Art Museum, Seoul Arts Center.
