Chagall Witness of His Time

DESCRIPTION

From October 11, 2025, to February 8, 2026, the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara will host the major exhibition “Chagall, Witness of His Time,” an exhibition of remarkable emotional intensity that invites the public to immerse themselves in the poetic universe of one of the most important and beloved masters of 20th-century art.

This extraordinary journey reveals how Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 – Saint-Paul de Vence, 1985), universally renowned for his floating figures and colorful enchanted atmospheres, managed to keep alive the memory of his homeland, traditions, and affections while continuously projecting them towards new expressive horizons.

Featuring 200 works-including paintings, drawings, and engravings-and two immersive rooms that allow visitors to admire some monumental creations in an engaging and spectacular dimension, the exhibition highlights the profound humanity of Chagall’s work. A multifaceted artist, visionary and witness of his time, he was a singer of beauty and guardian of memory. Fragmented faces, multiplying profiles, mirrored portraits: through the theme of duality, he reveals his extraordinary ability to capture the dual nature of human existence. Furthermore, flying lovers, talking animals, explosive bouquets become universal metaphors transcending the visible. Through his poetic gaze, Chagall transforms personal experience into shared reflection, unveiling how beneath the apparent simplicity of his creations lie themes that resonate with all.

curated by Paul Schneiter and Francesca Villanti.
