CHAGALL

DESCRIPTION

Former Church of San Marco | Spazio ARCA, Vercelli

13 October 2026 – 29 March 2027

From 13 October 2026, the former Church of San Marco | Spazio ARCA in Vercelli hosts CHAGALL, a major exhibition dedicated to one of the most beloved and instantly recognisable artists of the twentieth century.

Featuring 60 works, the exhibition explores more than half a century of Marc Chagall’s (1887–1985) extraordinary artistic career, inviting visitors into a poetic and visionary world where dreams, memory, love and colour are endlessly intertwined.

From lovers floating through the sky to fantastical animals, from circus performers to magnificent bouquets of flowers and images of his hometown of Vitebsk, Chagall transforms personal memories and experiences into a universal visual language.

Beneath the apparent lightness of his paintings lies the story of an artist who lived through the great tragedies of the twentieth century, from war to exile, yet never abandoned beauty, poetry or the power of imagination.

Highlights of the exhibition include Russian Village (1929), Portrait of Vava (1953–1956), Lovers with a Blue Donkey (c. 1955), The Purple Rooster (1966–1972) and Large Red Bouquet (1975).

The exhibition unfolds through four thematic sections — The Inner Village, The Voice That Remains, The Human Stage and Blooming Again — accompanied by Chagall’s own words and poetry.

The exhibition is further enriched by a selection of works from the Giuseppe Iannaccone Collection, opening up a dialogue with Italian painting from the 1920s to the 1940s.

Promoted and organised by the City of Vercelli and Arthemisia, in collaboration with the Fondazione Giuseppe Iannaccone, the exhibition is curated by Francesca Villanti and Daniele Fenaroli.

An evocative journey into the world of an artist who transformed memory into poetry and suffering into beauty, reminding us that even in the darkest times, art retains the power to inspire dreams.
