CHAGALL

HOPE AND LOVE

An Unmissable Art Event in Chengdu:

Marc Chagall’s Work Comes to Southwestern China for the First Time

This year, Chengdu will welcome a major Marc Chagall retrospective to southwestern China for the first time. In April 2021, 155 classic works full of love and hope created by Marc Chagall, a modernist master on par with Picasso and Matisse, will be shown in Chengdu. This spring, love will heal, and color will light the way through the pandemic.

Chagall: A Modernist Master of Love, Life, and Art

In our life there is a single color, as on an artist’s palette, which provides the meaning of life and art. It is the color of love.

– Marc Chagall

Pablo Picasso said that love is stimulating, passionate, and fluid.

Vincent van Gogh said that love is rough, painful, and unobtainable.

Marc Chagall said that love is innocent, unique, and able to erase time and heal all suffering.

After a century, Marc Chagall will finally come to Chengdu, and after a harsh winter, he will add vibrant color from the palette of life to springtime in the city.

From April 10 (opening to public from April 11)to July 11, 2021, LUXELAKES · A4 Art Museum will present “Marc Chagall – Love and Hope” a project by ComediArting and the first exhibition for modernist master Marc Chagall in southwestern China. This show is the largest traveling exhibition of Chagall’s work in China to date. This first exhibition of Chagall’s work in southwestern China centers on the themes of love and hope across seven sections: “Hometowns, Second Homes, and Distant Lands” , “Magician of Color” , “Love” , “Surrounded by Flowers” ,  “Suffering, Lamentation, and Faith” ,  “Fables, Myths, and Classics” and “Paris: A City of Tumult, Hope, and Rebirth” . The show will feature 155 works from Chagall’s mature period to his later years, spanning six decades and multiple mediums, including oil, watercolor, gouache, tempera, and etching. These works from 1925 to 1981 demonstrate his extraordinary skill in different mediums; the exhibition will showcase oil paintings such as Lovers with the Blue Donkey, The Bride and Groom and the Angel, The Purple Rooster, Lovers with a Bouquet of Flowers, and Painter and Acrobat, and the art historically acclaimed sets of prints, rarely exhibited in full, for La Fontaine’s Fables and the Bible.
