“Picasso the origins of the myth” on display in the Firmafede Fortress in Sarzana

The Firmafede Fortress in Sarzana hosts one of the worldwide initiatives to celebrate the figure of Pablo Picasso on the fiftieth anniversary of his death.
From 8 April, in the fascinating Medici castle, 18 photographs by authors such as Robert Capa and Juan Gyenes will be on display together with lithographs, etchings, aquatints, ceramics and drypoints by the Spanish painter.

“With this exhibition Sarzana joins the most important cities in the world in paying homage to one of the greatest geniuses of our time – said the mayor Cristiana Ponzanelli – We welcome works and contributions from all over Europe and we continue on the path started four years ago by telling the city through culture. Hosting Picasso inside the Fortress demonstrates how we don’t want to entrench ourselves in our past”. Next to the Municipality of Sarzana the organization is by Paloma, a Comediarting project, in collaboration with the ‘Casa Natal Picasso Museum in Malaga‘, whose director José María Luna Aguilar will be in town for the opening.

“He died on April 8, 1973 after having gone through two centuries – explained the curator Gina Ingrassia – and we will recount Picasso’s entire artistic career. From the extraordinary bohemian Paris of Montmartre in the blue period to the works of the La Californie studio house purchased in 1955. The photographic selection of two artists who made the twentieth century such as Capa and Gyenes is precious”.
If ceramics was a mature passion forartist, the “Woman’s Head” instead depicts Dora Maar (Henriette Theodora Markovitch), painter and photographer who was his partner between 1936 and 1943.
“Picasso’s family was Ligurian and therefore it is an exhibition that also acquires an even deeper meaning for this reason, it is a return to the origins”, underlines the curator of the exhibition Lola Durán Úcar.
